What is a Basaglar KwikPen?

The Basaglar KwikPen (Basaglar) is an insulin glargine injection prescribed to treat type 1 and type 2 diabetes in adults, and type 1 diabetes in children 6 years and older.

The Basaglar KwikPen belongs to the drug classes, antidiabetics, insulins, and long-acting insulins. These medications work by lowering and controlling your glucose levels in the long term.

The Basaglar KwikPen is not recommended:

  • If you are allergic or have had an allergic reaction to Basaglar or ingredients in Basaglar
  • For children who suffer from type 2 diabetes
  • For children under the age of 6
  • If you have symptoms of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia)

Indications

Basaglar is a long-acting insulin that works over 24 hours and is approved to lower blood sugar levels in adults with type 1 and 2 diabetes and children with type 1 diabetes who are 6 years and older.

Usage

Storage

Unopened Basaglar KwikPens should be stored in their original packaging in a refrigerator at 36-46°F (2-8°C). Do not freeze the Basaglar KwikPen and do not use it if it has been frozen.

When you start using your pen, store it at room temperature up to 86°F (30°C) for up to four weeks. Do not expose the Basaglar KwikPen to direct heat and keep it away from light.

Keep out of reach of children and do not use it after the expiration date.

Instruction

Use the Basaglar KwikPen as prescribed and follow the instructions given by your healthcare provider. Your healthcare provider will determine the appropriate dose and schedule based on your individual needs and medical history.

Do not change your dosage and take more than what is prescribed or stop using the Basaglar KwikPen without consulting with your doctor. The Basaglar KwikPen can be used at any time of the day but must be used at the same time each day.

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember, but if it’s almost time for your next dose, skip the dose and take your next dose at the regular time. Do not catch up by taking two doses at once. If you took more than prescribed, contact your doctor immediately or seek emergency medical care. If you take more than one dose of Basaglar within 24 hours, it can cause your blood sugar to drop too low.

Your healthcare provider will teach you how to use the Basaglar KwikPen properly and where to inject yourself. Ask your healthcare provider if you don’t understand the instructions. Inject Basaglar under the skin of your stomach area, buttocks, upper legs, or upper arms. Use a different site each time you inject and do not inject Basaglar directly into your veins.

Only use Basaglar which is clear and colorless. If it is cloudy or slightly colored, return it to your pharmacy. Do not mix Basaglar with any other type of insulin.

Do not share your Basaglar KwikPen with anyone, even if the needle has been changed, because you can transmit serious infections to each other.

Dosage

The Basaglar KwikPen is available as a disposable pre-filled pen with 100 units of insulin glargine per 1 milliliter (ml) of solution.

There is no specific starting dose and varies from person to person. Your doctor will usually start you on the lowest dosage and adjust it until your blood sugar levels are at the desired levels.

Your dosage will depend on the condition being treated, whether you have any other medical conditions or take any other medications, your weight, and your age.

The recommended dose is usually between 1 and 80 units per injection.

Your dosage may have to be reviewed if:

  • you start exercising or there is a change in your physical activity
  • you gain or lose weight
  • experience an increase in stress
  • suffer from an illness
  • change your diet
  • take other medications
