What is Ventolin HFA (Albuterol)?

Ventolin HFA is a medication prescribed to prevent and control wheezing, and shortness of breath caused by breathing problems, such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder (COPD) in adults and children 4 years and older. It also prevents exercise-induced asthma.

Ventolin HFA belongs to the drug class, bronchodilators. These medications work by relaxing the muscles around the airways to breathe more easily.

Ventolin HFA is not recommended:

What are the Indications for Ventolin HFA?

Ventolin HFA is approved for the treatment of bronchospasms associated with reversible obstructive airway diseases, such as asthma.

How is Ventolin HFA used?

Storage

Ventolin HFA should be stored at room temperature between 68°F and 77°F (20°C and 25°C) away from light and moisture, with the mouthpiece facing down. Do not puncture the canister or expose it to high heat or an open flame.

Instruction

Ventolin HFA is for inhalation only and should be used as directed by your doctor, even if you feel well.

Shake the inhaler well before use and remove the cap. Breathe out to empty your lungs. Place the mouthpiece of the inhaler in your mouth and press down the top of the inhaler while you breathe in slowly and deeply. Take the inhaler out of your mouth and hold your breath for 5 to 10 seconds. Breathe out slowly through your mouth. Rinse your mouth out and gargle with water after each use. Do not swallow the water, spit it out. Clean the mouthpiece after each use by wiping it with a dry tissue or cloth.

If Ventolin HFA gets into your eyes, rinse it with a lot of water.

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, only take one dose. Do not catch up by taking two doses at once.

Do not change your dosage, take more than what is prescribed, or stop using Ventolin HFA without consulting with your doctor. If you took more than prescribed, contact your doctor immediately or seek emergency medical care.

Dosage

Ventolin HFA is available as an oral inhalation aerosol in the following strength: 108 mcg albuterol sulfate (90 mcg albuterol base).

Prevention of sudden asthma symptoms: 2 sprays repeated every 4 to 6 hours.

Exercise-induced bronchospasm: 2 sprays taken 15 to 30 minutes before exercise.
