What is Jardiance?

Jardiance, a brand-name medication produced by the drug manufacturer Boehringer, helps treat patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus by:

  • improving blood sugar levels in combination with a healthy diet and exercise
  • reducing the risk of death from heart attack, stroke, or heart failure for people with type 2 diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular disease.

Jardiance contains empagliflozin which is classified as a class of drugs called sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors. Empagliflozin works by helping the kidneys get rid of glucose in the bloodstream.

It comes in tablet form and is taken orally twice daily.

Effectiveness of Jardiance

During a 24-week clinical study with adults with type 2 diabetes, patients experienced the following results:

  • Hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) levels were lowered by 0.7-0.8 percent
  • Fasting blood sugar levels were lowered by 19-25 mg/dL
  • Body weight was reduced by 2.8-3.2 percent from starting body weight.

In a 3-year clinical study, it was found that Jardiance reduced the risk of cardiovascular death by 38% in both people with heart disease and diabetes.

This drug is also effective when used together with other diabetes medications such as insulin, metformin, glipizide and pioglitazone.

How to use Jardiance

Before starting Jardiance and each refill, patients should review the medication guide provided by your pharmacist. Consult your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions regarding this drug.

Jardiance is taken orally once daily, typically during morning hours, with or without food. A doctor will prescribe your dose based on your current medical condition and response to treatment.

Take this medication at the same time each day in order to achieve optimal results.

Consult your doctor if you find your condition does not improve or worsen while taking this medication such as your blood sugar levels remain high or increase.

If you miss your dose, take it as soon as possible. If your next dose is near then just skip the missed dose. Continue taking your dose at the usual time. Never take a double dose to catch up

Certain individuals are advised against taking Jardiance. These include those who have type 1 diabetes, hypoglycemia, are on dialysis, have decreased blood volume, have chronic kidney disease, have necrotizing fasciitis, have high cholesterol levels, or are allergic to Jardiance or any of its ingredients. Patients with any of these factors are advised to discuss such conditions with their physician and find a more suitable alternative for treatment.

Patients that have taken too much Jardiance and overdosed on this medication should contact their local Poison Control Center or seek emergency medical attention immediately.

Jardiance reduces a patient’s blood sugar levels by allowing excess sugar in the body to be excreted via urination, also helping to reduce the individual’s A1C levels in the process.

Jardiance is not a medication intended to lower a patient’s blood pressure. However, it has been shown to reduce the systolic blood pressure of those using the medication either alone or in combination with metformin.

Jardiance is not a medication that is intended to cause weight loss or assist in a patient’s weight loss journey. However, due to the medication allowing individuals to better manage their condition, it may often result in slight weight loss occurring during treatment.

It is not necessary to take Jardiance with food. It can be taken once per day, with or without food.

The time frame in which patients may begin to notice an improvement in their condition will vary amongst individuals. However, it will often take approximately 24 weeks until the best possible results may be observed. It is essential that patients continue to take Jardiance as instructed, without missing any doses, for maximum efficacy.

Jardiance may cause side effects in some individuals, and this most commonly includes yeast infections and urinary tract infections. If patients experience any of the following serious side effects while using this medication, they should seek emergency medical attention and notify their doctor immediately: allergic reactions, vaginal yeast infections, necrotizing fasciitis, hypoglycemia, yeast infection of the penis, dehydration, ketoacidosis, or a severe urinary tract infection.

Heart failure is typically treated with multiple medications. Jardiance is able to improve the heart’s ability to effectively pump blood throughout a patient’s body, and this has been shown to significantly decrease a patient’s risk of adverse cardiovascular events associated with heart failure.

Although Jardiance is commonly prescribed for treatment alongside many other medications, it is important that it either not be used or be used with caution in those who are also taking any medications that can cause hypoglycemia (low blood sugar). Since it may lower a patient’s blood sugar levels, taking Jardiance along with medications that may also lower blood sugar could result in adverse effects associated with hypoglycemia.

Jardiance is available in tablet form and comes in the strengths of 10 mg and 25 mg.

If you are currently experiencing or have previously experienced the following conditions, please consult with your physician regarding the safety and efficacy for treatment in your particular situation: high cholesterol levels, electrolyte imbalances, hypoglycemia, kidney disease or impairment, or low blood pressure.
